As a Masters degree, the LLM is intended for those who wish to pursue legal studies at the highest level.
To be eligible for the LLM, candidates must either have a Law degree or proven work experience in the legal profession. The course is taught and examined on the basis that students are familiar with Contract Law and with the basic mechanics of Common Law.
The course is taught in English and applicants who have not done their prior academic work in English will have to satisfy a language condition to be admitted to the LLM course.
LLM students take four papers, each of which is generally assessed by means of written examination. These courses are:
1. PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL LAW
2. INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW
3. INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL LITIGATION
4. SETTLEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL DISPUTES
In addition, you will have to write a 15,000-word dissertation. The Dissertation must be submitted no later than SIX months after the successful completion of the programme. For your dissertation, you will need to investigate a legal issue meriting examination. The research must involve collection and analysis of original data or analysis of existing data in an original way and must make a positive contribution to the legal knowledge and profession. If upon submission the dissertation is not deemed to be of an acceptable standard, then you will need to re-submit your dissertation within two months and pay a resubmission fee of 100 euro.
Entry requirements are flexible and vary, but we generally demand:
(a) a good first degree in Law from an internationally accredited university
Upon successful completion of all modules and the dissertation, you will be awarded an LLM in International Law.
We don’t usually offer exemptions at graduate level, but if you think you have a strong case you are welcome to complete the exemption form that is part of the application form.
Programme fees for Distance Learning students are set at 4,000 euro. On top of the programme fees, you will need to pay an application fee of 80 Euro, examination fees (130 euro per subject), as well as a dissertation evaluation fee of 250 euro.
For Centre students, fees vary according to Centre.
Exams are held at approved examination centres around the world every June and January. In order to be eligible to take exams in January, students must submit their Examination Entry Form by 30 November; to take their exams in June, by 30 April.
